Dominion Boulevard South

Project Details

Dominion Boulevard South, started in October 2015, underwent construction to provide a sufficient roadway to accommodate the demands of travel from the Chesapeake area. The project consisted of widening 1.9 miles of Dominion Boulevard to a 4-way divided roadway, as well as intersection and drainage improvements. During the project, approximately 32,000 tons of asphalt, 9,000 feet of underdrain, and 20,000 tons of CTA were installed. 2,900 feet of utility work were also placed during the project.

The project faced challenges due to the ground conditions of the site. An engineering plan of using sand underneath the roadway was no longer suitable, causing a new value proposal using Recycled Asphalt Pavement to be submitted and subsequently approved. The use of the pavement has allowed crews to continue working despite the heavy rainfall. The project was completed December of 2016.
