| Branscome and the Environment |
Branscome is proud of our efforts to reduce the impacts our industry has on the environment. Our recycling efforts are a major factor in the sustainability of our company. For years Branscome has used Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP) in our mix designs for both public and private paving projects. By using RAP, we reduce the demand for virgin aggregates and asphalt cement needed to manufacture new hot mix asphalt.
Demolished waste concrete is another product that Branscome recycles. Waste concrete is brought to our facilities where it is stockpiled and then crushed into varying grades of aggregates. This material is then reused on project sites in lieu of virgin aggregates which can equate to a substantial price savings for our customers. Branscome also manufactures hot mix asphalt using recycled fuel oil to fire the plant to dry and heat the aggregates. Waste oil is also used to heat our shops during the colder months. Material from our borrow pits also protects our local environment. We supply impervious clay to line area landfills, which forms an impenetrable barrier to contain waste products and protect groundwater. This aids in preventing leachate from impacting the soil and our water supply. Branscome is also affiliated with the Elizabeth River Project which is committed to the restoration and ecological well-being of the Elizabeth River system within the cities of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach. |
